Assignment 1 - Exploring an AI Tool for Information Work
Objective
To gain practical experience with an AI tool relevant to your professional interests, and to reflect critically on its potential and limitations in information practice.
Instructions
1. Choose a Tool
- Select one AI tool related to your professional or career interests
(e.g., a library discovery system, metadata tool, chatbot, recommendation system, or generative AI tool used in scholarly communication).
2. Learn & Demonstrate
- Explore the tool hands-on and learn its basic functionality.
- Create a 2-3 minute demo video showing:
- What the tool does
- How you used it for a small example task
- What you noticed about its performance
3. Write a Short Reflection (≈100 words)
- The reflection should address:
- What worked well and what didn’t
- What benefits or limitations you observed
- How you could see (or not see) this tool fitting into information work in your field
Deliverables
- A 2-3 minute demo video (upload to Canvas)
- A ~100-word written reflection (upload to Canvas)
Grading Rubric (15 points total)
1. Tool Selection & Relevance (3 points)
- The selected AI tool is clearly identified and relevant to the student’s professional or career interests.
- The choice makes sense in an information, library, or ICT-related context.
2. Demo Video: Clarity & Demonstration (6 points)
- The video clearly explains what the tool does.
- The student demonstrates a small, concrete example task using the tool.
- The demonstration is understandable and focused (no need for technical depth or polished production).
3. Reflection: Critical Observation (6 points)
- The reflection is grounded in the student’s hands-on use of the tool.
- It clearly discusses what worked well and what did not.
- It identifies at least one benefit and one limitation.
- It thoughtfully considers how (or whether) the tool could fit into information work in the student’s field.
Note:
Grading emphasizes clarity, engagement, and critical reflection rather than technical sophistication or prior experience with AI tools.
